Updates for December 2022

December The new sapping season starts in late winter; typically from mid-March to mid-April in most maple-syrup producing areas, when temperatures are below freezing at night and above freezing during the day. Tours usually begin in early Spring! That's a great time to visit a maple sugar orchard or sugarworks and see a sugaring demonstration; watch them make maple syrup!

Where are Maple Syrup farms/orchards/sugarworks, etc.? Well, they're not in Hawaii or Florida, for sure. They are concentrated in the northeast and upper midwest in the US and the eastern half of Canada, even though maple trees do grow in the northwest.

  • Woodlands Maple Syrup at MacPhee's Orchard - Uses natural growing practices, Maple Syrup
5151 Launching Road, Cardigan, PE C0A 1G0. Phone: 902-583-3203. Directions: On Route 311, 10 kilometers east of Cardigan, PE Open: Monday to Friday - noon to 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday - 10 am to 6 pm. We use natural practices, but are not yet certified Organic. Payment: Cash, Check.  In 1998 we started Woodlands Maple Syrup. Our Maple Syrup uses a traditional method of production: Maple sap collected in buckets, gathered by hand from over 450 Sugar Maple Trees and a wood fired evaporator. The sugar season usually begins in mid March and can last into late April during a late spring. The average season lasts three to four weeks. Visitors are welcome. It is recommended to make an appointment as "sugaring" is weather dependent and it is difficult to predict any more than two days ahead if we will have any sap to process into syrup.
